Tobias Gutmann

“My goal is to visually interpret the depth of a person, more than what I see on the surface.”
Düsseldorf, Dubai, Shanghai, Melbourne and Papua New Guinea: the refreshingly analogue “Face-o-mat” by and with artist Tobias Gutmann (b. 1987) is travelling around the world and recording encounters with people. By means of a self-developed repertoire of figures and forms, the portrayed individuals, along with their stories, are transformed into abstract facial compositions. Stylisation becomes a process that can be seen and experienced live.
Tobias Gutmann grew up in Wewak, Papua New Guinea, and lives in Zurich. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in visual communication at the Bern University of the Arts and spending some time working in Tanzania, he continued his education by studying storytelling at the renowned Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. He has realised performances, exhibitions and publications – and his works have been exhibited nationwide and internationally. The question of whether there is a universal code in the abstraction of the representational is something that runs through Gutmann’s works as a common thread. In 2017, the Cartoonmuseum Basel is sending the artist and his machine on a journey through Switzerland.
