Tirelessly, Chris Ware keeps taking the visual language of comics further. His multifaceted panels, which are technically dry and yet playful at the same time, analyse his characters’ inner and outer workings, their memories and their imaginings with cool precision. The artist’s orderly, stylising and markedly controlled ligne claire, his sophisticated page layouts and his accompanying play with typographies that are reminiscent of old advertising fonts make him unique. Pierre Thomé, who runs the comics study programme at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, joins Anette Gehrig to talk about the special features of Chris Ware’s art.
