El Gato Muerto

Where Stories Settle Down

There could hardly be a more fitting collaboration: two creative universes coming together to preserve fleeting moments. 'El Gato Muerto' is a travelling art project by Barbara Signer and Michael Bodenmann. Designed in the intimate style of a Japanese dive bar, the installation is far more than a spatial experience. It is a living archive. With every stop, every guest, and every memory and story shared by its participants, it continues to evolve organically.

Now, a new chapter is being added to this Gesamtkunstwerk: the Cartoonmuseum Basel joins as a guest. Accompanying it is Basel’s renowned scratchboard artist and comics star Thomas Ott, who will capture and visualise the evening’s fleeting moments in a fascinating live drawing performance. Scratchboard is a mysterious, almost forgotten technique. Layer by layer, the artist scratches hidden stories and images directly out of deep black board and brings them to light. Nothing endures quite like stories, especially when they find their permanent home within a lasting artistic installation.
